My trip to Russia with Youth On Missions

By: April Mayle

I was privileged to be able to go on a Youth On Missions trip in 1995 to Russia.  When I was in grade school, the teacher told the class about communism and how it affects people.  She told us that in Russia, people weren't even aloud to worship God due to the government.  I found that very astounding.  Here in America, I have always enjoyed freedom of worship.  When they announced at a Mid-Winter Youth retreat that there would be a Youth On Missions trip to Russia, I knew I had to go.  I wanted to see firsthand what God was doing in this country.  I have never had a calling to be a missionary to a foreign land, but a desire for God to use me in any way that he wants.  What I experienced on this trip, would change my outlook on life in a lot of ways.

There were seventeen young people who went on this trip, along with Bro. Norman Pasley, Bro. Brian Kinsey, and Bro. John Godair and their wives.  Most of the young people were from Ohio.  (If you've never went on a trip with Brother Paslay, you are definitely missing out!)  We first traveled from Columbus to JFK airport in New York where we met up with the rest of the group.  We then traveled for several hours to Finland where we did some minimal sightseeing.  From there, we flew to St. Petersburg, Russia.  My first impression of Russia was that it was a beautiful country during the month of July.  My second impression was that the people were very oppressed and sad.  If anyone needed liberty through the power of the Holy Ghost, it was the Russian people.   I saw the Black River where Nathaniel Urshan's father, Andrew baptized some 200-300 Russian People in Jesus name in 1916, after they received the Holy Ghost.  God had already done great things in this country.

During the next ten days, we entered the communities of three Russian cities, passing out tracks and reaching out to people.  Through the help of our interpreter, Andre, we held street services where we sang, testified and preached to the Russian people.  We invited them to services that were held in the evening.  In St. Petersburg, there were a few that attended those services and came to the altar to repent.  We then flew to a smaller town, Orenburg.  It's not even on the map.  It was a poor community with lots of hospitals and people lived in shacks.  We spent the most time in this town and saw God move the most there.  The people were so hungry for the gospel.  Every day, we would visit hospitals and sing and preach for the people.  When we asked the patients if they wanted prayer, they would come forward eagerly.  What was wonderful, is that the doctors and nurses came forward as well, desiring prayer.  We held services in an old movie theater that was already becoming a well established church.  Once inside the walls, the oppression was lifted, and people worshipped without intimidation.  Finally, you could see the liberating power of God in the Russian people.  At least five people received the Holy Ghost during these services.   The children loved us.  Leaving was sad.  We flew to Moscow for the last two days of our stay.  We met Brother and Sister Turner, the missionaries in Moscow.  We had one service there before returning home.

No, I did not see thousands of people receive the Holy Ghost.  I know that we planted precious seed in the country of Russia all for the glory of God.  That seed has been watered and cultivated by missionaries, AIM workers, and our fellow Russian believers.  It's hard to tell how many lives were touched through Youth on Missions.  I came home with a new appreciation for the truth, my country, democracy, and liberty in the Holy Ghost.  I think that every Apostolic young person should experience a youth on missions trip.  You will soon learn how blessed you are and you'll have the opportunity to bless someone else's life as well.  This trip was worth every sacrifice that was made to make it possible for me to go and I thank God for the opportunity.
